What types of reels does Heirloom convert to digital?
Heirloom converts 8mm, Super 8, and 16mm film reels, including silent and sound film. We also convert magnetic audio reels. If you’re unsure what format you have, Heirloom specialists will identify it for you and provide a free digitizing quote.
Can I send mixed reels together with other media?
Yes. You can send any combination of 8mm, Super 8, and 16mm film reels, and any other media to be preserved, in one shipment. No sorting, labeling, or preparation is required—Heirloom handles everything upon arrival.
What if my reels are fragile, brittle, or damaged?
Aging film and tape is handled with extreme care. Heirloom inspects each reel and performs cleaning or stabilization when possible to achieve safe playback. Media that cannot be digitized is never charged, so you only pay for recoverable content.
Will each reel become its own digital file?
Yes. Each film reel is converted into its own individual digital video file, preserving the original structure and avoiding unnecessary merging. Magnetic audio reels are delivered as separate digital files for each recorded track, making everything easy to organize, download, and share.
What digital format will my reels be delivered in?
Digitized film is delivered as MP4 digital video at standard definition, compatible with nearly all devices and platforms. Any magnetic audio tapes are delivered as MP3 digital audio files at 128 kbps. All files are easy to store, stream, and share on Heirloom.
Why should reels be converted now?
Film and tapes naturally degrade over time due to age, heat, and handling. Converting to digital protects it from further loss and makes it easy to store securely, stream privately, and share without risk to the original reels.
Will I get my original reels back?
Yes. All original reels are carefully returned to you after digitization. Your originals are treated as irreplaceable and handled with care throughout the process.
