Photo Negatives to Digital Service
Your photo negatives hold the highest-quality version of your images, often with more detail and better order than printed photos. Heirloom scans negatives into sharp digital images—preserving clarity, color, and sequence—so your memories are easy to organize, share, and protect for generations.
What types of photo negatives can Heirloom scan?
Heirloom works with all types of photo negatives, including standard 35mm negatives, medium-format negatives, large-format negatives, and other legacy sizes. No worries if you’re unsure what type you have. Heirloom experts identify and send an itemized digitizing quote upon arrival.
How are 35mm or 110 negatives counted for pricing?
Standard negatives in strips are scanned by the hundred images. This makes pricing simple and economical when negatives are still intact in their original strips.
What qualifies as a specialty negative?
Negatives that are cut from strips, stored individually, or larger or smaller than standard are treated as specialty negatives. These are scanned individually to ensure proper alignment, focus, and handling.
Why are images from negatives higher quality than prints?
Digital images created from negatives are typically higher quality than scans of prints because they’re not limited by the paper they were developed on. Negatives retain more detail, dynamic range, and color information—and they’ve usually experienced far less handling and wear than printed photos.
Are negatives usually in better chronological order than prints?
Yes. Customers are often pleasantly surprised to find that negatives are better organized and more sequential than prints. While prints were frequently shared, rearranged, or separated over time, negatives often remained grouped by roll, preserving the original shooting order.
How are scanned negative images organized digitally?
Each grouping—such as an envelope, sleeve, or box—is delivered as one dedicated online folder, with every frame saved as its own digital image. This keeps your digital collection aligned with how the negatives were originally stored.
Will I get my original negatives back?
Yes. All original negatives, sleeves, and envelopes are carefully returned after scanning. Your film is treated as irreplaceable and handled with care throughout the process.
