Heirloom's 8mm film to digital service makes it easy to preserve your family's priceless home movies before they fade or deteriorate. We professionally scan regular 8mm motion picture film into 480p standard-definition digital MP4 videos, making them easy to watch, share, and preserve for generations.

Whether you're sending 8mm film, photographs, slides, negatives, videotapes, or other media, simply send everything together. Heirloom specialists carefully inspect every item, identify exactly what you've sent, verify it can be digitized, and prepare a detailed, itemized quote.

There is no counting, measuring, or guesswork—and no obligation. You don't need to know how many feet of film are on your reels. During our free inspection, Heirloom specialists identify every reel, determine whether it's a small reel (3-inch diameter) or large reel, inspect it for damage, and email you a detailed, no-obligation quote. We begin scanning only after you've approved the quote and submitted payment.

Why Use an 8mm Film to Digital Service?

Regular 8mm movie film captured millions of family memories, but film naturally deteriorates with age. Colors fade, scratches accumulate, film becomes brittle, and repeated projection can permanently damage your home movies. Professional 8mm film scanning preserves every frame in a modern digital format before those memories are lost.

Why Choose Heirloom?

Most film scanning companies expect you to identify your film format, estimate the footage on each reel, and determine its condition before sending anything.

Heirloom doesn't.

Simply send your film, and Heirloom specialists will:

  • Identify every type of media you send
  • Identify every film format
  • Separate small and large reels
  • Inspect each reel for damage or vinegar syndrome
  • Verify every reel can be digitized
  • Prepare a detailed, itemized quote
  • Answer any questions before work begins

Only after you've reviewed and approved your quote do we begin digitizing your memories.

What's the difference between 8mm and Super 8 film?

Regular 8mm (Standard 8) and Super 8 are different movie film formats that require different scanning equipment. Super 8 has a larger image area and smaller sprocket holes than Regular 8mm film. If you already know you have Super 8, choose Heirloom's Super 8 to Digital Service. If you're not sure, don't worry—Heirloom specialists will identify your film during our free inspection, recommend the correct service, and prepare a detailed, no-obligation quote before any work begins.

Why does my 8mm film smell like vinegar?

A vinegar smell is usually a sign of vinegar syndrome, a form of film deterioration that affects acetate-based movie film as it ages. The film may become brittle, warped, or shrink over time, making it more difficult to scan. Heirloom specialists inspect every reel for vinegar syndrome during your free inspection. If the film can be safely recovered, we'll include the appropriate recovery service in your no-obligation quote. If it's too fragile to safely attempt recovery, there is no charge for that reel.

How do I know which 8mm film service to choose?

You don't have to. Simply send your film, and Heirloom specialists will inspect every reel during your free inspection and classify it as either a Small (3 inches in diameter), Large (over 3 inches), or Damaged if it shows signs of deterioration such as vinegar syndrome or requires specialized recovery. We'll then email you a detailed, no-obligation quote. If a damaged reel is too fragile to safely recover, there is no charge for that reel, and it won't be included in your quote.

How will I receive my digitized 8mm films?

Heirloom delivers each labeled film reel as its own 480p MP4 video in your private Heirloom cloud, where you can immediately stream, download, organize, and share it with family and friends. You can also add an Heirloom Flash Drive to your order, and your original film reels are safely returned.

Will my 8mm films be AI enhanced?

No. Heirloom's 8mm film to digital service is focused on creating the highest-quality digital capture of your original film before it deteriorates further. We carefully clean and professionally scan every reel to faithfully preserve your home movies. AI enhancements and video edits are digital processes best performed later by the content owner, allowing you to enhance copies while always preserving the original, unaltered digital capture.
