Frequently Asked Questions

How does Heirloom’s photo scanning process work?

Heirloom handles everything for you—from inspection to scanning to digital delivery—while keeping you in control. After your photos arrive, we count and classify them, then send you a clear, itemized quote. Scanning only begins after you approve it.

How long does it take to scan photos, albums, slides, and negatives?

Most photo scanning orders are completed in just a few days, but we attempt to have all orders completed within two weeks. Many customers are surprised by how quickly their scanned photos are ready. Heirloom prioritizes careful handling and accuracy over rushing the process.

Do I need to remove photos from albums before sending them?

No. Leave photos exactly as they are. With the least amount of risky handling, Heirloom carefully scans photos from albums, scrapbooks, and sleeves while preserving their original layout and order.

How are photo quantities counted for pricing?

Loose photos are economically scanned by the hundred. A neatly stacked pile about 1 inch tall equals approximately 100 photos, making it easy to estimate without counting. Albums, slides, and negatives are counted separately by type.

How are my photos organized and named digitally?

Heirloom preserves the original order and groupings exactly as received. Each stack, album, envelope, or grouping is placed into its own digital folder, so your memories remain organized and recognizable. Nothing is rearranged without your approval.

Can old, faded, or damaged photos be scanned, are they enhanced?

Yes, most old or fragile photos can still be scanned. Heirloom creates a high-quality 1-to-1 digital capture without automatic enhancements. This gives you a clean master file, and many free online tools are available if you’d like to apply your own digital edits later.

Will I get my original photos and albums back?

Yes. All original photos, albums, and materials are carefully returned to you after scanning. Your originals are treated as irreplaceable and handled with care throughout the process.
