16mm Film to Digital Service
Heirloom's 16mm film to digital service makes it easy to preserve your priceless home movies, educational films, church films, and historical recordings before they fade or deteriorate. We professionally scan 16mm motion picture film, including both sound and silent reels, into 480p standard-definition MP4 videos that are easy to stream, share, and preserve for generations.
Whether you're sending 16mm film, photographs, slides, negatives, videotapes, or other media, simply send everything together. Heirloom specialists carefully inspect every item, identify exactly what you've sent, verify it can be digitized, and prepare a detailed, itemized quote.
There is no counting, measuring, or guesswork—and no obligation. You don't need to know how many feet of film are on your reels. During our free inspection, Heirloom specialists inspect every reel and classify it as either a Small, Large, or Damaged reel, then email you a detailed, no-obligation quote. We begin scanning only after you've approved the quote and submitted payment.
Why Use a 16mm Film to Digital Service?
16mm film has preserved family memories, documentaries, educational programs, and professional productions for decades, but film naturally deteriorates with age. Colors fade, scratches accumulate, film becomes brittle, and repeated projection increases the risk of permanent damage. Professional 16mm film scanning preserves every frame as a 480p MP4 video before those memories are lost.
Why Choose Heirloom?
Most film scanning companies expect you to identify your film type, estimate footage, and determine its condition before sending anything.
Heirloom doesn't.
Simply send your film, and Heirloom specialists will:
- Identify every type of media you send
- Inspect every reel for vinegar syndrome
- Verify if every reel can be digitized
- Classify every reel as Small, Large, or Damaged
- Determine if your film includes synchronized sound
- Prepare a detailed, itemized quote
- Answer any questions before work begins
Only after you've reviewed and approved your quote do we begin digitizing your memories.
Why does my 16mm film smell like vinegar?
A vinegar smell is usually a sign of vinegar syndrome, a form of film deterioration that affects acetate-based movie film as it ages. The film may become brittle, warped, or shrink over time, making it more difficult to scan. Heirloom specialists inspect every reel for vinegar syndrome during your free inspection. If the film can be safely recovered, we'll include the appropriate recovery service in your no-obligation quote. If it's too fragile to safely attempt recovery, there is no charge for that reel.
Which 16mm Film to Digital Service should I order?
You don't have to decide. Simply send your film, and Heirloom specialists will inspect every reel during your free inspection and classify it as either a Small, Large, or Damaged reel if it shows signs of deterioration such as vinegar syndrome or requires specialized recovery. We'll then email you a detailed, no-obligation quote. If a damaged reel is too fragile to safely recover, there is no charge for that reel, and it won't be included in your quote.
Can you digitize the sound on 16mm film?
Yes. If your 16mm film includes an optical or magnetic soundtrack, Heirloom can digitize both the movie and its synchronized audio. During your free inspection, Heirloom specialists identify whether your film contains sound and include audio transfer in your detailed, no-obligation quote. Silent films are digitized without audio.
How will I receive my digitized 16mm films?
Heirloom assigns every film reel a unique tracking number before digitizing it. Each reel is delivered as its own 480p MP4 video in your private Heirloom cloud, with the digital file name corresponding to the tracking number on the original reel. You can immediately stream, download, organize, and share your videos, add an optional Heirloom Flash Drive to your order, and your original film reels are safely returned.
Will my 16mm films be AI enhanced?
No. Heirloom's 16mm film to digital service is focused on creating the highest-quality digital capture of your original film before it deteriorates further.
We carefully clean and professionally scan every reel to faithfully preserve your home movies and historical recordings without altering their original appearance. AI enhancements and video edits are best performed later by the content owner using software that continues to improve each year. This preserves an original, unaltered digital master while allowing you to create enhanced copies whenever you choose, using the tools and settings that best match your own preferences.
