Charleston Photo Scanning FAQs

Where can I get old family photographs scanned near Charleston?

Visit Heirloom in Mount Pleasant for print, album, slide, negative and scrapbook scanning. Our nationwide digitizing service is based here in the Lowcountry, giving local families a place to meet our team and discuss their photographs face-to-face.

Should I remove photographs from albums before bringing them in?

No. Leave them in place, especially when they are attached to adhesive or magnetic pages. Our standard photo album service scans individual photographs in the album. During inspection, we assess the condition and explain how the collection can be handled.

Can you preserve the handwriting on the backs of photographs?

Yes. Handwritten names, notes and dates on the backs of loose prints are captured at no extra charge as separate images placed next to the corresponding fronts in the digital sequence. Point out any important notes when you drop off your collection.

Can I leave my slides in their carousels and keep family groups together?

Yes. Bring slides in their current boxes, trays or carousels, and leave photographs and negatives in their existing groups. We preserve sequence and use corresponding identification numbers for containers and digital folders.

Should I bring the prints, the negatives or both?

Bring what you have and tell us if there are duplicate versions of the same photographs. Our Mount Pleasant team can assess the available originals and help you decide what to include in your quote before scanning begins.

What is the difference between photo album scanning and scrapbook scanning?

Photo album scanning creates individual 600 dpi JPG images of the photographs. Scrapbook scanning preserves complete pages as 300 dpi PDFs, including captions, decorations and the arrangement of keepsakes. Show us the book and explain which details you want preserved.

Can you scan framed, fragile or unusually sized photographs?

Bring them in their current condition for assessment. Items requiring individual handling are quoted as specialty scanning. Our team checks what can be captured safely before work begins; avoid forcing photographs out of frames or peeling them from album pages.

Is there a lower-cost option if I do not want my albums returned?

Yes. Our separate Photo Album Scan & Recycle service costs approximately 40% less than standard album scanning and provides individual 600 dpi JPG images. Albums may be dismantled, and originals are not returned. Remaining photographs and album materials are securely destroyed after a 90-day review period, with eligible materials recycled. Choose standard scanning for originals you want to keep.
