Photo Album Scan & Recycle
Clear the Shelves
Have a closet full of family photo albums, aging books in boxes, or an entire collection to preserve? Heirloom’s Scan & Recycle service turns those photographs into high-quality digital images for approximately 40% less than our standard photo album scanning service.
You receive individual 600 dpi JPG images, grouped into a separate digital folder for each album and kept in the same order they appeared in the book. The savings come from a simpler handling process: we digitize your photographs without rebuilding the albums for return.
Your Originals Are Not Returned
This service permanently retires your physical collection after digitization. We may dismantle album bindings, cut out pages, remove protective coverings, and remove photographs as needed to streamline scanning. Photos will not be placed back into the albums.
After we review your scans and notify you that your digital images are ready, we retain the remaining original photographs, album pages, and other album materials for 90 calendar days. This gives you time to review your files and request a rescan if needed.
After the 90-day hold, the remaining originals will be securely destroyed through our certified destruction process, and eligible materials will be recycled. The destruction includes the original photographs, not just the empty albums. Once destroyed, the originals cannot be recovered or rescanned.
If you want your original albums or photographs returned, choose our standard Photo Album Scanning Service.

How much does Photo Album Scan & Recycle cost?
Heirloom’s Photo Album Scan & Recycle costs approximately 40% less than our standard Photo Album Scanning Service. Prices range from $5.99 for a Mini album containing 1–20 photographs to $149.99 for an Oversize album containing 401–500 photographs. Allowing us to dismantle albums and skip reassembly and return reduces handling time. Every album still receives individual 600 dpi JPG scans.
Will my original photo albums and photographs be returned?
No. Photo Album Scan & Recycle does not include returning the original photographs or albums. Album bindings may be dismantled, pages cut out, and photographs removed to streamline scanning. Photos will not be placed back into the books. If you want any physical albums or photographs returned, select Heirloom’s standard Photo Album Scanning Service for those albums before work begins.
What digital files will I receive, and will my album order be preserved?
You receive individual 600 dpi JPG images, organized into a separate digital folder for each album. Each folder corresponds to the album’s assigned identification number, and images follow the order in which the photographs were found. Files are delivered to your private Heirloom cloud account for viewing and downloading. A USB backup drive is available separately.
How long are my originals kept before destruction and recycling?
Heirloom holds the remaining original photographs and album materials for 90 calendar days after notifying you that your digital images are ready. Review your files and contact us within that period if an image needs rescanning. After the hold, the originals are securely destroyed through our certified destruction process, and eligible materials are recycled at no additional charge. Destroyed originals cannot be recovered or rescanned.
Do I need to remove or count the photographs in my albums?
No preparation or counting is required. Leave your photographs in their albums. During your free inspection, Heirloom identifies each album, verifies its photo count, and prepares an itemized quote. Album sizes are based on photograph count, not the book’s dimensions. Scanning begins only after you approve the quote, authorize the Scan & Recycle process, and submit payment.
Can I drop off photo albums locally or ship them to Heirloom?
Yes. Customers throughout the Charleston Lowcountry can bring photo albums directly to Heirloom in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. Customers nationwide can ship their collections to us. Whether you have a few books or bins filled with aging albums, we inspect the collection and provide an itemized quote before work begins. There is no obligation to proceed.
Will this service preserve handwritten captions and complete album pages?
Photo Album Scan & Recycle creates individual images of the photographs, rather than reproductions of complete album pages. Handwritten captions, decorative layouts, and other page elements are not automatically included. If those details matter, ask about Heirloom’s Scrapbook Scanning Service before approving your quote. Decide what you want preserved before authorizing destruction of the physical originals.
