Midlands History Is Still Trapped on Old Media
Across Columbia and the Midlands, family and community history remains stored on VHS tapes, film reels, slides, photographs, audio cassettes, and boxes of documents. These collections may preserve generations of family life, military service, churches, schools, businesses, and civic history—but much of it can no longer be viewed or shared.
South Carolina heat and humidity are also hard on media stored in attics, garages, closets, and storage units. You don’t have to digitize everything at once, but it is important to start. Heirloom can inspect a mixed collection and help you identify what should be preserved first.
