Your reels may hold a wedding, a childhood summer, a family gathering or scenes of the Lowcountry from decades ago. We digitize:
- Regular 8mm film: Also called Standard 8.
- Super 8 film: Including recorded sound when present and recoverable.
- 16mm film: Including silent films and films with sound.
Bring small reels, larger reels or a collection of different formats. Our team will identify what you have and assess its condition.

Each reel is delivered as its own 480p standard-definition MP4 video, making it easier to keep the recordings connected to their original reels.

Charleston Film Reel Digitizing FAQs
Where can I get 8mm and Super 8 film digitized near Charleston?
Heirloom accepts film reels directly at our Mount Pleasant location. You can visit the Lowcountry home of our nationwide digitizing service, meet our team and discuss your films without mailing them yourself.
Can someone help me tell whether I have Regular 8mm, Super 8 or 16mm film?
Yes. Bring your reels to our Mount Pleasant team for identification. You do not need to choose a service online first. We can explain the format, assess the condition and include the appropriate service in your quote.
Do I need a projector or an estimate of the footage on my reels?
No. Bring the reels themselves. You do not need working projection equipment or a measurement of the film’s length. We classify your reels during inspection and explain the pricing before you commit.
Can you preserve the sound recorded on my old film?
Yes, when your Super 8 or 16mm film contains a recoverable soundtrack. Our team checks for recorded audio during inspection and includes the appropriate sound-transfer service in your quote. Silent reels are digitized without recorded sound.
What if my film smells like vinegar or looks brittle?
A vinegar-like odor can indicate deterioration in acetate film. Bring the reels for assessment before attempting to project them. We inspect their condition and explain whether recovery is possible. Some damaged film can be digitized, but not every reel can be safely recovered.
Should I rearrange or combine the reels before bringing them in?
Keep your existing groupings, labels, boxes and notes together. During your visit, tell us what you know about the people, dates and events. Each reel becomes a separate digital video, helping you connect the files with the originals.
Can you digitize historical films from Charleston churches, schools or community organizations?
Yes. We welcome organizational collections as well as family home movies. Bring your film for inspection and discuss the collection’s purpose, priorities and labeling needs with our team. We prepare an itemized quote before work begins.
Can I collect my original film reels from Mount Pleasant afterward?
Yes. Your original reels are available for pickup after digitizing. Your new digital videos are delivered through your private Heirloom vault, and you can add a USB backup. Any recycling is handled according to your instructions.
